  • Athens-
The Birthplace of Democracy

Athens was a major cultural, political, and intellectual participant to the Greek world and to the Mediterranean. Its greatness can be seen with its devoted praise of Athena- Goddess of Wisdom and War, and the city's namesake- to those who resided within the city. Notable residents would be:

Socrates(3), the father of thought and the Socratic Method, a sure way to find the answer to what is truly just and what is justice, though all the talking got him eventually sentenced to death by hemlock after an ostracism.

Another important figure everyone should know about already is Pericles (2), the father of Democracy. He perished at his Parthenon, praying to Athena to rid Athens of the plague that had struck it during the Peloponnesian War. Before death, however, Pericles spent time speaking with the public on their matters, as well as hosting symposiums where the brightest minds and the elites would gather to share their opinions, though he never really joined them.

General Cleon (5) would follow Pericles. Throughout the Peloponnesian War, Cleon disliked Pericles for his lack of an aggressive nature towards the Peloponnesian League as the Spartans set camp outside the city walls. Though Cleon wasn't good with the people during these hard times, he still expressed their concerns and found his way to the top too late to save the Delian League from their imminent demise.
