  • Meet #006. She is what is commonly referred to as a layer hen. She has been used her entire life to produce eggs for human consumption. Now, she is a senior and can no longer lay eggs - which means she is disposable to a production farm. We rescued her, along with 20 other senior babes, a couple of weeks ago. We worked side by side with Second Chance Chickens Microsanctuary. This beautiful girl is a Barred Plymouth Rock - which is a breed commonly used to produce eggs. A lot of times, hens like #006 are culled when they stop producing. The definition of culling is the action of sending an inferior or surplus farm animal to be slaughtered. It is a common practice. Yesterday, I spent about 45 minutes sitting in the grass, watching the chickens, ducks and turkeys. They are so fascinating. I ended up running inside and grabbing one of my good cameras to take some portraits of these feathered dinosaurs to share with all of you. Now I understand why @sfisherx’s favorite animal to photograph is the chicken. #006 needs a name and a sponsor. We also have three others in need of both - #039, #052, #045. Because these girls need names and sponsors, we are allowing their new sponsors to name them. If you are interested in sponsoring one of these girls, contact @ryanwithane today! We also have a handful of other animals in need of sponsors! Our sponsorship program is an extremely personal experience and it opens up windows in the form of visits to the sanctuary, new merch, giveaways and just knowing in your heart that you are literally providing food for a rescued animal directly. ❤️❤️❤️

She is beautiful I am glad she has I loving home in her senior years. I love my chickens and have a few rescue old girls of my own. But I will tell you...she is not a Barred Plymouth Rock. She is the wrong color/patterning. She may be a Rhode Island Red or a Partridge Rock. But definitely not Barred.

I love chickens. Their little waffles across an open field make my heart melt. Our chickens got fresh water today and they all waddled over knowing that they were about to get fresh water. They all circled around and started to drink peacefully. It made my heart melt like crazy! It was the sweetest little moment. Chickens are aware and so smart.
