Dear Raj and Simran,

It’s been 24 years since I last saw you, getting on the train on that fateful day in Punjab. How have you been? Has your happily-ever-after been just as happy as you made a whole generation believe?

It was Karwa Chauth a couple of days back, it made me wonder do you two still fast for each other like you once did all those years ago? Times have changed. But I would kill to believe some little nothings haven’t. Take, for instance, we have streaks of snaps these days, we send memes on Whatsapp and post mentions in Insta stories but a part of my generation still uses “agar ye ladki tujhse pyar karti hai toh palat kar zarur dekhegi” as a yardstick for onset of love.

To be honest, when I visited London in 2015, I even bought a miniature bell souvenir back for a girl I had been pursuing then. Silly, I know. It never worked out for us but as I was in the queue to make that purchase, for a brief moment, it felt like home in a foreign land.

Even today, as we watch re-runs of your story, my mum tears up quietly, her eyes well up often, she thinks I do not notice. But I guess I have a bit too much of her in me. Time and again, I have flocked to your struggles but lately, I have been taking to them as my own.

Kabhi waqt mile to batana, kya bade bade shehron me aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain?

Love,
Animesh
