  • Here’s Japto, from Wodaabe people. They are beautiful and vain and they believe to be the most beautiful people in the word. Matching together any small coloured thing they create their own outfit, they make-up and they are ready to perform the show! The dance imitates and exaggerates a Sahel bird gestures. During the show a woman can choose one of them as husband. You can see an old woman going close to the stage to give them strength, and in the following picture a girls is about to choose her man. In the last bit you will see a video, turn the sound on! #mydakardjibouti #viaggiaconsara #africa #discoveryafrica #chad #discoverychad #woodabetribe #woodabe

#mydakardjibouti @viaggiaconsara

  • Once a year at the end of the rainy season, Chad’s Wodaabe nomads hold an elaborate courtship festival in which the men beautify themselves in hopes to attract a girl. The Wodaabe place great emphasis on beauty so they spend hours painting on makeup and dressing in colorful costumes. When the men are inspired, they dance and sing to show off their white eyes and teeth as a symbol of their beauty. The dance can last until sunrise the next morning to demonstrate their stamina. The girls, usually between 13 and 15 years old, quietly observe the dancers and slowly make their way to their man of choice never making eye contact. To make the selection, they quickly point to their choice, the clan all bow to demonstrate admiration for the selected man, while the girl is unceremoniously whisked away to await what may be a night of passion, a marriage or nothing at all. .
